The story of a protracted conflict between the Snow-walker witch, Gudrun, and her half-human son Kari, her mirror image, is told mostly from the point of view of Jessa, the daughter of a dispossessed nobleman. With her two knives and equally sharp wits, she makes a satisfying heroine, the only female in a group of companions who resist Gudrun's efforts to conquer their realm and draw Kari under her spell. Their adventures, steeped in Norse mythology and Old English epic poetry, unfold in three books, published separately in England and bound together in this edition. The middle tale, "The Empty Hand," with its monster created by Gudrun's spells, recalls Beowulf. Fisher is a skillful storyteller, using clear language and plenty of action to keep the plot moving. She is at her artistic best when she evokes the northern landscape, with its green pastures, vast haunted forests, and icy reaches where the northern lights glow. Her characters are painted with broad strokes, their conflicts and relationships simple and direct. However, patching together the three titles into one continuous narrative leaves some rough spots. A character from the first book is dropped without explanation, and the second book offers unnecessary retelling of previous events. Repacked for your confusion

Originally published in England as three separate volumes, Snow-Walker combines The Snow-Walker's Son, The Empty Hand and The Soul Thieves. Using Norse and Celtic mythology to build on, Fisher creates a frozen world dominated by a Sorceress name Gundrun who has dethroned the Jarl. Her equally powerful son, Kari, has been banished to Thrasirshall where he is befriended by fellow outcasts, Jessa, Skapti, Brochael and others. Set upon by runebeasts and other magic the travels bring hardship to many as Gundrun steals the souls of loved ones, including Wulfgar's fianc�. Their journey to lands steeped in old, dark traditions should put them in peril more often but the characters seem fated to live happily ever after and no permanent damage to done. The novel has a choppy pace to its construction from three individual works but this alone cannot explain the work's awkward plot and minimal character development. The story is difficult to follow in places making it more suitable for older readers who will enjoy the challenge of making sense of things. The action is limited and not sustained, leavening the reader bored and disappointed. A re-read may highlight missed intricacies but it's probably not worth the effort.

This was very intriguing...

I have never read a fantasy book quite like this one. It took quite a bit from Norse mythology and some of it reminded me of Beowulf. It takes place in a very cold country in the north.

In the first book, Jessa and Thorkil are banished to Thrasirshall because their parents were not loyal to the present Jarl (ruler) and his evil Snow-walker bride from the north. The snow-walker, Gudrun, banished her monster son, Kari, to Thrasirshall with only one man to look after him. When they arrive, they find Kari to be the mirror image of his mother. (This theme recurrs over and over in the book; the same, but opposite, etc.) He hates his mother as much as the rest of the country does. Soon the Jarl dies and Gudrun sends assassins to kill Kari. He escapes with his few friends and heads back to the Jarlshold. At the end of this book, he defeats his mother and she goes back to the land of the Snow-walkers, beyond the end of the world.

In the second book, a strange monster begins terrorizing the Jarlshold and surrounding countryside. Thorkil is dropped as a main character. Now the 6 main characters are Jessa, Kari, Brochael (Kari's guardian), Wulfgar (the new Jarl), Skapti (a poet) and Hakon (a servant or slave). This book takes place at the Jarlshold for the whole book and is mainly about how no one, not even his friends, will trust Kari because he has power to control people and looks like his mother. At the end of this book, the monster is neatly disposed of, though it had a satisfying ending.

In the third book, Wulfgar is about to be married when Gudrun sends a soul-stealing spell and takes his bride. It soon begins to affect the whole Jarlshold and the friends, except for Wulfgar, journey to the land of the Snow-walkers to try to defeat Gudrun once and for all. Along the way they meet a ghost army, a shape-shifter named Moongarm, a settlement that performs human sacrifice to appease the gods, etc. It was very fast paced. Eventually, they reach the Snow-walkers' land and good triumphs again. It has a happy, but strangely, also sad ending. You feel like something is missing for the characters and they will never completely have a happy ending where everything ties up perfectly. For this reason, the ending is well done. Good never triumphs completely.

The book was narrated from Jessa's point of view, except for a few changes to Hakon or Kari. I thought putting the Norse myths in gave it a very different feel than most other fantasy books I've read. Although it was a VERY long book, it moved along at a breath-taking speed and was never boring, just sort of dream-like. You were never sure what was real and what wasn't. It was definitely a unique read and I recommend it to any fantasy lovers who love a long, cold read! Im planning to look up other books by this author and I'm very glad I took the time to read it.

Welsh author Catherine Fisher strikes gold in an icy, shimmering new fantasy, "Snow-Walker." With likable characters and vidid writing, Fisher demonstrates her talents in the arena of Norse mythology, filled with shapeshifting wolf-men, soul-stealing ghosts, and icy witches.

Jessa is horrified when she learns that the Jarl (a sort of king-chieftain) has exiled her to Thrasirshall -- where Kari, the son of the Jarl and his cold, evil wife Gudrun, lives in complete isolation. He's rumored to be a monster. But when Jessa arrives, she finds that Kari is not a monster -- but a lonely young boy who has the power to destroy his scheming sorceress mother, and has been sent away because of that.

After the death of the Jarl, Gudrun vanishes, and a new Jarl, Wulfgar, is chosen. And Kari vanishes back to the north for a few years, honing his magic abilities. But with power comes greater fear. Kari fears becoming like the evil Gudrun, and others fear his dark magic. Even Wulfgar begins to doubt him, especially when Kari is accused in a prophecy by a priest.

But Kari and Jessa have more than just accusations to deal with. A monstrous, bearlike creature is coming to the Jarlshold, with Wulfgar as its target. And Wulfgar's bride's soul is stolen by Gudrun. Kari and his loyal friends band together to defeat the evil Snow-Walker -- but is the good in Kari enough to keep him from becoming like Gudrun?

The first book by Catherine Fisher, "The Oracle Betrayed," was a tepid mix of Greek and Egyptian cultures. She fares much better with the rich Norse mythology, against a backdrop of monsters, snow, ice, and sorcerous people with eyes like bits of ice. Werewolves, armies of dead men, villages on lakes, and spirits conjured out of loneliness and misery are only part of this story.

It's actually like a trilogy of novellas, each a little over 160 pages long -- "The Snow-Walker's Son," "The Empty Hand," and "The Soul Thieves." With plenty of room to stretch, Fisher's writing is tense, descriptive, poetic, and simple. Her descriptions of magical beasts and phantoms are spellbinding. The main problem is that the climactic battles in "Soul Thieves" and "Snow Walker's Son" seem to finish too quickly and cleanly, although the finale is a satisfying one.

Though the strong-willed Jessa is the lead character, Kari is the center of the novel -- a boy who never had a normal life, and has a lingering fear of being turned to evil. The supporting characters like Wulfgar, Kari's loyal guardian Brochael, crippled thrall Hakon and others are well-drawn. Gudrun isn't given much dimension (okay, she's evil and cruel, we got it), but her chilly plotting is well-done.

Catherine Fisher is well-suited to the robust Norse legends of the snowy north, and the solid "Snow-Walker" is an excellent fantasy read for adults and teens alike.

Deep History and the Brain

This is a fairly short book that Harvard professor of history Daniel Smail describes as a series of connected essays. It is essentially an argument to include all of human history, not just written history, in academic survey courses and textbooks. Most of the book is an interesting historiographical survey of how historians essentially ignore "pre-history"; the problems with periodization; and a post-modern rejection of Christian Universal History metanarratives which are stealthily still lurking in much of western secular historiography to this day.

Smail suggests using evolution as a new approach - one idea, he suggests, is that changes in brain chemistry, from external and internal forces, play a role in shaping human history. For example the widespread adoption of caffeine in Europe in the 17th century altered Europeans brain chemistry and thus the track of history. Similar investigations could be done with "pre-historic" periods. Smail doesn't go into many specifics, this is a concept book about how to approach history, not a definitive scientific analysis or conclusion - it is part of the larger ongoing discussions on how the ideas of evolution can be applied scientifically to the humanities (history, literature, etc) . Overall I was intellectually stimulated throughout and greatly enjoyed the ideas and perspectives, Smail is well versed in western historiography and the philosophy of history. Even if you are not convinced by the titles premise (almost a sort of hook), discussed in only one chapter, there is a lot to learn in this short but pithy work.

A guide for the guild

History has addressed a number of Big Questions through the years. As Daniel Smail notes, however, the biggest one has been "Where to begin?" For centuries, the answer seemed simple: the "Creation". Scholars in Christian Europe were able to begin history with the couple in Eden, building from that well-defined starting point. Later, the historians "guild" shifted their foundation. The result was a m�lange of opening chapters, ranging from the founding of "civilisation", through the beginning of writing to particular societies such as the Greeks, Sumerians or Egypt. Smail dismisses all of these as short-sighted. He wants a realistic view of history to encompass "Deep Time". In this enthralling book, he urges historians to take up some science and rewrite history to encompass the early days of humanity.

As a professor of history, Smail deftly summarises the various schools of historiography. Early history is dubbed "sacred" for its reliance on Biblical origins. Time was fixed and man's place in those histories was determined. This type persisted until "the bottom dropped out of time" with the advent of geology, paleontology and particularly, biology demonstrating the inadequacy of sacred history. Disputes arose, he notes, during the 19th Century carrying through well into the 20th Century, over the "starting point". Providing many examples, he laments that even as it became clear that human origins extended far back in time, history texts failed to acknowledge early human input worthy of notice. In some cases the view of "pre-historic" humanity even portrayed them as solitary wanderers on the landscape. Agriculture, in this view, was the foundation of human communities, hence discernible history.

Smail's recognises the many advances made in archaeology, genetics and cognitive sciences in recent years. The Paleolithic, he argues, is no longer a "time before history". The key to his thesis is the brain didn't suddenly shift into high gear with the coming of agriculture or the development of writing. In fact, he argues that if we truly need a "starting point" for history, it should rest with the onset of speech and language. These skills forged stronger ties among members of human communities. Those communities, in turn, formed identifiable groups we now decree are "cultures". Cultures bind and reinforce ideas, behavioural standards and even diet. These can be traced back in time to approximate origins, creating a history without texts. Humans may be one species, but uniformity is lacking. In historic terms, our cultures have deep divisions.

History without text means a way must be found to derive those origins from today's evidence. Smail introduces what he hopes will be adopted as a new discipline - "Neurohistory". It's important to remember that humans are the product of natural selection along with the rest of the animals. While the development of our brain was rapid by evolutionary time-scales, it still remains a product of natural selection. Smail warns against assuming a neurophysiological approach means "genetic determinism" - our brains allow too much variation for such a simplistic approach. Even so, patterns seen in other primates have equivalence in our species, and historians must at least be aware of them. Nothing better refutes the "Great Man of History" school of thinking more than the knowledge that the "Great Men" and the populations they ruled carried the same neurotransmitters in their brains. Which ones were triggered and by whom?

Smail goes on to explain the fundamentals of how the brain and body operate. Genes are essential in the various processes, but there are influences among the genes, from other cells and from environmental conditions. Humans don't react the same way to a given stimulus. Bush trackers, for example, have been raised in an environment where small details stand out from the background - a disturbed pebble means a passing gazelle. This same astute observer might well be run down by a speeding car while crossing a busy street if he's never been in a city. The point for Smail is that all these differences must be considered when composing a history of human activities down the ages. Almost inevitably, Smail is led into a discussion of Edward O. Wilson's 1975 classic, "Sociobiology" and the tumultuous years after its publication. Yet, as Smail notes, that work is a foundation for the type of science-based history he wishes to encourage.

That new discipline is well-summarised in the Epilogue to this comprehensive and persuasive analysis of the field of history teaching and its future. The trappings of civilisation didn't alter our brain chemistry, which must be the root of any new growth in the field. He calls for a closer alliance between history and science, particularly cognitive science. Disappointing but not bad

This is kind of a bipolar book. The first three quarters criticizes the way other people do history or social science. Smail holds everyone to extremely high standards and finds everyone deficient. The end of the book is a first cut at a history he wants to see, a history that focuses on the human brain. After all, everything humans do is caused by their brains. Here, he is impressionistic and unrigorous. The Smail of the first part would give this book one star. The Smail of the end would give it five. I give it three.

Smail argues that people's brains cause them to act so as to achieve certain levels of chemicals in the brain. Two centuries ago, the English utilitarians tried to found a social science on something similar. People, said Jeremy Bentham and James Mill, try to achieve pleasure and avoid pain. To the extent they do, they experience "utility." The idea of trying to maximize utility became a part of what was then called political economy. Eventually, it became conventional wisdom that a pleasure/pain principle was too simple, so economists redefined utility to mean preference, and dropped the question of where these preferences come from. If neurology can put some flesh back on the bones of "preference," it may indeed form a basis for a better economics and history.

Smail likes the metaphor of a "drug." The stresses of modern life cause undesired levels of some brain chemicals. Some people shop to change the levels to more desired ones. Thus, shopping is a drug. Similarly, in medieval times, attendance at church services--experiencing the communal ritual, the smoke, etc.--acted to change brain chemicals in desired ways. But when more powerful drugs, like the caffeine in coffee, came to Europe in "the long 16th century," attendance at church went down.

What to make of this? In the words of Deirdre McCloskey, "all theories are metaphors, and all metaphors are lies." No theory is perfect but many theories are useful. Centering a history on modern knowledge of how the brain works may lead to significant new insight. I look forward to seeing what Smail does with the idea.

I would recommend this book to people 1) who are fascinated by listening to historians talk about how to do history, 2) who want a very short explanation of the modern resolution of the nature/nurture question (an easy-to-read longer version is Matt Ridley's Nature Via Nurture: Genes, Experience, and What Makes Us Human), or 3) who want to see what an early attempt at neurohistory looks like.

Very well written and has rationale for pre-op, post-op and intra-op anesthesia considerations for multiple conditions one may encounter in the operating room. Small enough to carry in a bag into the OR.

Avoid this text, if you can. If you must use this text, buy used.

Unfortunately my review conveys huge disappointment. Avoid this text, if you can. If you must use this text, buy used. Just make sure it's the correct edition for your particular course/instructor. Don't fall for the online support. Online learning support offered by the publisher, and for which an access code is required, is marketing B.S., and hardly helpful to the student. Remember, you can always buy the access code if you think you need to see the same content online.

This text is well marketed, but weak in content. It's poorly written, proof-read and edited. The publisher has success with this text by essentially offering a canned course to instructors, making it relatively easy for them. For the student, however, it's an insult overall, and singularly unimpressive as a learning tool. This includes the author's SPSS (IBM statistics program) "support". Be aware that you may need to access YouTube and/or more sophisticated material to adequately and thoroughly understand these basic concepts, as presented by the author.

Another demeaning aspect of this text is evidenced by sarcasm veiled in lame humor that is peppered throughout the flimsy text. Ironically, the numbers of words and the value of content contained in the "statistician" contributions (offered by the Heavey's epidemiologist-spouse), far exceed the author's. Elizabeth Heavey's writing style fosters confusion rather than clarity- even of simplest concepts. I don't know who this author imagines she is writing for. Examples are not illustrative, and she never offers more than one illustration or example per concept; nor does she offer any particular nursing research wisdom pertaining to any aspect of statistics she claims to teach.

Online learning support includes author, word-for-word, digital audio recordings of 13 chapters. The author yawns and sighs, sirens, dogs, traffic, and general atmospheric noise drones along as she reads her chapters with zero enthusiasm. She does not read the statistician contributions, however. Too bad. Throughout the text the author constantly reminds the reader of her PhD in epidemiology and her college instructor status.This text does not represent the nursing profession well. I am embarrassed by it.

The end-of-chapter assignments are worthy of note. The author's style extends to the assignments. Confusion and frustration versus clarity and discrete understanding of simple concepts.

Shame on the mercenary publisher who let this text loose on the nursing education community. I'll take this experience into account when teaching.

The content was wonderful and understandable

I am very dissatisfied with this book, The content was wonderful and understandable, however when buying an electronic version just as I did for my kindle I was unaware that the access code the book usually comes with was not supplied. I am in a graduate studies program and my instructor grades us on the questions provided with the online learning website. This created an issue for me as you can see. However, you can go to the online website and buy the access code directly from the publisher for an additional cost of only $35.95. Yes, I bought this version thinking it would be cheaper and easier to use and I ended up paying about $40 more than the actual cost of the paperback version that actually comes with the access code.

There were math errors in the examples -- not good. It's almost like they wrote the book to ...

Did not care for this book. Too much left unsaid, too few concrete examples and the numerous review questions had no relation to the sparse examples offered in the short chapters and only half of them had answers; am I right or am I wrong? What's wrong? There were math errors in the examples -- not good. It's almost like they wrote the book to keep statistics confusing instead of simplifying it into a useable tool. If you have a recent background in statistics and are familiar with the terminology and tests it may be alright. Thank God our instructor was able to decipher the codes and give us clear examples for application. There is a web site with some interesting learning tools that should be utilized right away. I'm sorry if you have to use this as a text book for class. Pretty much left the entire class feeling confused but evidently we did learn something because we were able to cobble together a research project using information from the text.

Great Help with My Term Paper

This is a excellent book and was very useful for my term paper. It has a lot of background info on tons of subjects. I found the "recommended reading" list very helpful. And this book is very interesting reading. It is witty and fun to read.
For somebody who did not know much about China, this book really filled in the picture.

Jason Diceman outlines the use of a very valuable tool for group based decision making in the Dotmocracy Handbook. This approach is a great way to ensure that amongst a large, heterogeneous group of stakeholders, everyone has an opportunity to express ideas and propose solutions on equal footing. The use of the Dotmocracy sheets in the brainstorming and feedback processes counters traditional "groupthink" traps often encountered in the conference or focus group environment where ideas gain disproportional analysis based on the rhetorical skills or prestige of the initial presenter. The incorporating the Dotmocracy sheets into a decision making process empowers participants to advocate ideas that might otherwise stay dormant.
