Very Informative

Patricia has done an excellent job of laying out Biblical principles for an abundant life. I was blessed by every chapter and the activations at the end. She includes her book Decree at the end. I highly recommend as she stated believing and proclaiming the word of God. His word does not return void, it accomplishes all it is sent out to do!

Excellent book for both beginner and experienced

This is an excellent book. I have an engineering degree but since I was out of college for almost 10 years I needed a book to go through every topic in such a way that doesn't look basic but refresh all that I learned back in college. This book served the purpose. Moreover it touched topics like Markov Chains and Stochastic processes. It also explains linear programming (simplex and M method) in a very simple way with tons of examples. Examples have been very well chosen and every intricate concept is explained by going through the examples step by step.

Concept of probability is very well explained in this book. Baye's theorem is a piece of cake if you read this book. Overall, I'm very happy that I chose this book.

A great textbook for end users of mathematics

This book is just very good. It is a top-quality, superbly on target solution for end users of mathematics. I had selected and subsequently used it as a textbook for a freshman calculus course aimed at prospective economics majors at an Ivy League college. My goal was to present a broad scope of the fundamental concepts of applied mathematics relevant to the social sciences, while keeping the exposition at the basic level of mathematical sophistication. Given the objective, one needs a textbook that would replace most proofs with carefully chosen exemplifications, rely on technically undemanding exercises, but enable the teacher to introduce concepts at a lively pace and tie them to interesting applications. This textbook meets all the requirements.
Our course used essentially only the more advanced parts of the book. The selection of topics was systematized by the idea of staying focused on some of the basic mathematical methods designed for solving broadly understood problems of optimization, extrapolation, and prediction. Formally, students were required to learn algorithmic skills, like finding extrema of functions of one and several variables, linear programming, basic routines for ordinary differential equations and Markov chains. Primary emphasis was put on understanding the differences and similarities between continuous and discrete, deterministic and random. The book served us well and we felt truly rewarded by its amazing collection of well selected, well thought-through real-life applications. I am enthusiastic about this book and so were very many of my students.

Great for a student, great for a lover of fiction.

Wonderful selection of iconic Korean stories, authors, themes, which progress chronologically through a tumultuous modern trajectory. Themes center around modernization, Japanese occupation, male-female relationships, trauma, war, development and authoritarianism, rural vs urban, and so on. Heavy reads, prepare to have to sit and chew with the graphic characters and scenes for a few days (graphic in their rawness and or helplessness).

I ordered this book for my modern korean literature class and it was just what the teacher wanted. All of the stories give an inside sight into the thinking and mid-set of the writers under japanese colonization. This is an amazing book for anyone interested in korean history and culture or even if you like to read. It's refreshing :)

To fulfill university requirements, I took a Korean Lit class in which I enjoyed reading this anthology. I'm neither Korean nor a humanities major of any kind, but I enjoyed learning about the Korean culture, history, and literature through this collection. Most of my classmates--except the one that also reviewed it here--didn't seem to care for the class or text. However, I've sold off most of my college texts and kept this one.

Primarily for Baptists

Of the books currently available on the subject of deacons, this one is about in the middle. Written from a Baptist point of view, it sees the office of deacon through that lens. (By the same token, the Catholics have their own unique idea of what a deacon should be. You can read about that in The Liturgical Ministry of Deacons by Michael Kwatera.)

The first 60% of Webb's book is focused on the character and conduct of deacons, how they are elected and ordained, etc. Only in the last third do you get much about the actual work deacons are called to do. I would have appreciated more unpacking of Acts 6, and more on the actual work of serving widows, orphans and others in need. (Mercy ministry.)

Basic Primer on Baptist Deacons

This book is basic primer on what it means to be a Baptist deacon. It is very Southern Baptist in tone, but would be applicable in any Baptist congregation. It is an easy read, so it would be suitable for men in the church regardless of their educational background. This title would be ideal for a gift to share with newly ordained Deacons. There are many books on the market with a similar theme, but this one is perhaps the most recent and comprehensive. I recommend it.

Significant, but outdated

Chie Nakane's Japanese Society, is a structural analysis of what makes contemporary Japanese society Japanese. With this work, Nakane wishes to find out what the fundamental elements of society are in modern Japan. In the preface, she tells us that although some of the ideas she presents may not be entirely new, her "interpretations are different and the way in which [she] synthesize[s] these aspects" (viii) are. On the other hand, because this book was written in 1970, I cannot help but feel that some of the interpretations presented are outdated.

Since Nakane is Japanese, I have the tendency, and I think she does as well, to believe that she knows what she is talking about as far as Japanese society is concerned. However, she really only bases her arguments on whatever fits her structural pattern. She even says, "I have also refrained from quoting...precise data directly obtained from field surveys" and admits to having "drawn evidence almost at random" (vii). What Nakane actually does, rather than provide a structural analysis of Japanese society, is use certain aspects of Japanese society to validate structuralism

Nakane begins by saying that the Japanese form social groups depending on their "frame," or their place of work, and not by "attributes," or what one's occupation in a company is (1). What makes these groups uniquely Japanese is that the co-workers, perhaps the boss as well, often go out drinking after work - forming very intimate relationships. Nakane believes this to be the foundation of Japanese society. Here I believe she is absolutely correct - 30 years ago. For instance, the well-being of the company is synonymous with the well-being of the group. Therefore, the Japanese worker tends to feel more inclined to work for the good of the company, rather than his own personal gain. However, due to the decline of the Japanese economy, these feelings are not quite the same anymore. When the economy was great, workers could rely on their companies for stability, but that is not as true anymore.

One of the highlights of this book is how it deals with what are typically seen as traditional and time-honored aspects of Japanese society. For example, the life-time employment and seniority systems are often seen as traditions of Japan. However, we learn that they are actually post-war developments "not to be found during the earlier period of Japan's industrialization" (37). She shows us that although these systems are recent developments, they are the results of the informal structure of Japanese society persisting and finding new outlets within this period of modernization (8). Although the structural approach works well in this instance, I cannot help but think it is too stifling a view with which to approach the entire Japanese society. Since part of the idea of structuralism is that everything can be traced back to a specific root, it denies individuality. In this book, Nakane traces everything back to the "frame" or group someone is a part of. In doing so, she denies the Japanese person a sense of individuality. Even if the Japanese man's life is centered on a group of his co-workers, he is still an individual and has his own thoughts and feelings, regardless of whether they are expressed or not.

Nakane also discusses the structure within social groups. One of the problems I had with this section is that, even though Nakane's approach is well suited to her goal, it is quite possibly one of the most boring things I have read. For example, to explain the idea of vertical and horizontal organization, she uses an elaborate system of diagrams and of a-b, a-c and b-c variables to represent the relationships among group members - this goes on for pages. It would have been much simpler to state that without a group leader, the group falls apart. Instead, I almost get the feeling I am reading a math book. Since she is using a structuralist approach, I can see how these diagrams and variables could be justified, but it makes for dull reading nonetheless.

When compared to Ruth Benedict's The Chrysanthemum and the Sword, I believe Japanese Society has a lot to offer. Whereas Benedict had to rely mainly on interviews, Nakane is able to draw on her experiences of being Japanese. Another key difference is that, while Benedict merely tells us what the Japanese are like, Nakane tries to discover why the Japanese are such a way. Even though I do not entirely agree with Nakane's views, she has, at the very least, given us an alternative angle to look at what makes up the basics of Japanese society. If nothing else, this new angle should be viewed as a significant, though perhaps somewhat outdated, contribution to the study of Japan.

Japanese society in a nutshell

Nakane's description of hierarchy where workers in the same company from the vice-president down to assembly men have more in common than with their counterparts in other companies was extremely useful to me in writing my own book on Japan. Her descriptions of how seniority in groups is formed is extremely useful in understanding Japanese society as well.

This short book is a must-read for the plane. All business people, Japan Exchange and Teaching participants, expatriates, and high school and college exchange students should read the book before, during, and after their stay in Japan.

Structuralism and Jpanese Culture

From the very beginning of Japanese Society, Chie Nakane explains her dedication to the structuralist approach to understand Japanese society, "I have used wide-ranging suggestive evidence as material to illustrate the crucial aspects of Japanese life, for the understanding of the structural core of Japanese society. . ." (viii). Where Ruth Benedict admits to the limited evidence at her disposal in drawing her conclusions, Nakane boasts that her belonging to the culture which she is attempting to define will aid in her critical analysis. Nakane's goal with the text is to use her understanding of Japanese culture to draw conclusions about its basic components. With this knowledge, Nakane should be able explain all aspects of Japanese culture in relation to the a few basic underlying elements and rules. The assumption that Nakane's structuralist approach makes is that all actions taken by individuals in a given society can be traced to a limited number of cultural facets that are shared by all individuals that belong to a common culture.

The benefit of the structural approach is that it produces concrete results and information that can help in understanding a given culture. Benedict's approach assumed that when Japan entered the modern era, the cultural traditions were rendered inert and unchanging. Nakane's approach allows for traditional Japanese culture to be more organic. The traditional Japanese values grow to find new applications in a modern context. The problem is that this model implies is that traditional culture appears to precede the people that live it. Though the traditional values are intact, no new cultural identity can be formed as time goes on. The structural is tic approach relies on the basic elements of culture not changing.

Nakane uses her expression of Japanese hierarchy to explain much of Japanese culture throughout her book, "In abstract terms, the essential types of human relations can be divided, according to the two ways in which ties are organized, into two categories: vertical and horizontal," (23). Nakane's initial assumption about systems of organizing social relationships could be applied to any group of people, not just the Japanese. She uses this idea of hierarchy to express how Japanese relationships are formed. Most of the text is devoted to showing how all Japanese relationship fit into this vertical and horizontal model. Of course, if the reader agrees with her initial assumptions then there is no way to disagree with her argument. Nakane's structuralist approach uses deductive reasoning to draw conclusions, so her basic argument is made infallible as long as the reader agrees with her initial assumptions.

Another flaw in Nakane's argument is that many of her conclusions about the bare essentials of Japanese culture have changed greatly since the time the book was written. In 1970, Japan had not yet experienced the bubble economy nor the eventual recession. Many of the main points of the text's argument have decayed and lost their rigidity in face of Japan's failing economy, globalization and the eroding of traditional cultural values. Nakane's book gives an incredibly acute insight into Japanese society in the 1970's but many of its conclusions do not apply to contemporary Japanese culture. I am not attempting to deny that the underlying principles of Japanese culture and society have disappeared or drastically changed. The great frustration I had with this book is that in the past 20 years, many of the supposedly essential features of Japanese culture have lost their importance. The book left me feeling that The conclusions of a structural argument depend too much on the circumstances in which they were written and less on any objective point-of view. Japanese Society attempts to quantitatively define and explain Japanese culture. I do not think that that is possible.

Rhetoric's Historical Development as Expressed in Various Fields

A somewhat tough read that covers the evolution of rhetoric from Aristotle to the present. Olmsted explains how rhetoric develops topics around which arguments are made and built, these topics growing and evolving over time as the world changes. She touches upon the usual triumvirate of rhetoric – pathos, ethos, and logos – and how each is applied differently and to varying effect by various authors and historical figures. She explains the differences between Cicero and Machiavelli, for example, in dealing with rhetorical issues. It is at times difficult to keep track of who said what, but it is fascinating how a seemingly academic and even somewhat esoteric topic can guide think and have an historical impact (Machiavelli’s The Prince in shaping reaction and policy as city-states developed in Europe). Olmsted also turns to literature and covers how Milton and Austen used rhetorical means and strategies to achieve their ends, one to grapple with the reality of multiple theological world views after the reformation, the other to explore the challenges facing women in British society as they attempted to assert their individuality in a world changed by industry. Olmsted wraps up nicely with discussion of the role rhetoric played in bringing reconciliation to post-apartheid South Africa, and how rhetoric can drive legal analysis. This latter part is particularly fascinating, as Olmsted describes how statutory ambiguity allows for development of legal topics over time.

Good book overall.

This book for the most part is fairly easy to read. There are some part of the book where I got a bit lost, because of how it is written, especially how she cites. For example it will look something like this: "...office or profession ("of praise," Essays, P. 214)" If you are ok with having 5-7 citations like that in one page you should be fine. If you are not too comfortable with that method, it's still a good book and you should still read it.
Rhetoric by Olmstead covers pretty much everything you need to know about the history of rhetoric. And Olmstead does it in a way that is easy to grasp, she links earlist ideas on rhetoric (Aristotle) to other ideas on Rhetoric in history and disciplines (politics, law, etc.). It shows how Rhetoric changes throughout history; how and why Machiavelli's view are both different from and same as cicero and why it is different.

Awesome book, a must read.

What an awesome book and an awesome person. Should be read by everyone to give them an insight into how devastating war can be on young people and young adults. Had the great pleasure of meeting Dennis but just wish I had been able to get to know him better. READ THE BOOK, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

Interesting Book

Nancy Woloch has written, as the title suggest, brief history of Muller v. Oregon. The book is broken up into two halves. The first half deals with the history of Muller and the second half gives primary documents related to Muller and the time period. Woloch lays out a very logical argument and looks at the constitutional issues with Muller and the importance of the "Brandeis Brief" and how the brief was successful over time became less by the time the Court heard Adkins v. Children's Hospital. Woloch also looks at the reactions and results of the Muller decision and the cause and effect with cases that came after Muller. The addition of documents, which make up the second half of the book; the documents help to give greater insight to the history and understanding of not only Muller but of the Court and ideas during the early part of the 20th Century.

I would suggest this book to anyone who has to do research or is interesting in learning about women's history. This book has been extremely helpful in the writing of my maters thesis. The book is easy to read and Woloch makes clear points and is pretty even handed. I did not overly notice a bias one way or the other. There is a wealth of information in the book, yet it is not overwhelming but makes the reader engage with the book and read more. Check it out if you want to gain a brawer understanding of the Lochner Era. If you like this book then check out Paul Kens book Lochner v. New York: Economic Regulation on Trial
