Great Addition for Spanish Students in High School

This is a wonderful novel for Spanish I or II students in High School. I could even use it with 7th and 8th graders, I believe. We use it during the summer to keep their Spanish abilities active, and also to build confidence and comprehension. This book does many things for a student: 1) builds vocabulary 2) improves comprehension level 3) motivates students to find out "what happens" 4) provides a new way to increase Spanish knowledge.

As a teacher of ages 3 to 18 year olds, I use excerpts from these books here and there, and use them for a Summer Spanish reading program each summer. Great idea and execution!

Robin Scagell is a long-serving Vice President of Britain's Society for Popular Astronomy. The first astronomy manual for anyone!

I bought this book when my son and grandson first exhibited an interest in the stars and telescopes. I knew nothing about the type of telescope to purchase, and became completely bewildered as I researched a purchase, and discovered the amazing array of telescopes available. This book is brilliantly written and assumes no prior knowledge. Once the purchase has been made it then slowly and steadily leads the budding astronomer through a very complex subject simply. We would have been lost without this little book.

Great Ideas for Niche Income

There are plenty of ideas here for how to earn some extra cash (or even make a living) starting from scratch with no skills and limited financial resources. The author points out that some of the best sources of income are timeless (people gotta eat!) and that anyone willing to put a minimum amount of effort into it can make it happen.

My only complaint (and it is a small one) is that, since written in 1997, the book excludes any computer or web-based businesses. But on the other hand, I find that refreshing!

Great book with over 100 ideas on earning extra income. This book offers great information on marketing, advertising, crafts, publishing, and many useful ideas for stay home moms. this book is well written and easy to follow. I graduated from High school last year. I go to college part-time, have my own place, a full-time job and thanks to the knowledge I gained from this book, I now have a part-time job, putting in my own hours whenever I can. This may not be the best book ever written, but it sure helped me out.... I recommend it highly, especially for young women just coming in to the work field.....

Assembled from the woefully understrength 1st Marine Division and 1st Marine Air Wing units, the Brigade shipped out only six days after activation, sailed directly to Korea, was in combat within ninety-six hours of landing and, despite these enormous handicaps and numerically superior enemy forces, won every one of its engagements and helped secure the Pusan Perimeter. Despite its remarkable achievements, the Brigade's history has largely been lost amid accounts of the sweeping operations that followed. Its real history has been replaced by myths that attribute its success to tough training, great conditioning, unit cohesion, and combat-experienced officers. None of which were true. T. X. Hammes now reveals the real story of the Brigade's success, prominently citing the Corps' crucial ability to maintain its ethos, culture, and combat effectiveness during the period between World War II and Korea, when its very existence was being challenged. By studying the Corps from 1945 to 1950, Hammes shows that it was indeed the culture of the Corps-a culture based on remembering its storied history and learning to face modern challenges-that was responsible for the Brigade's success. The Corps remembered the human factors that made it so successful in past wars, notably the ethos of never leaving another marine behind. At the same time, the Corps demonstrated commendable flexibility in adapting its doctrine and operations to evolutions in modern warfare. In particular, the Corps overcame the air-ground schism that marked the end of World War II to excel at close air support. Despite massive budget and manpower cuts, the Corps continued to experiment and learn even at it clung to its historical lodestones. This approach was validated during the Brigade's trial by fire. More than a mere battle history, Forgotten Warriors gets to the heart of marine culture to show fighting forces have to both remember and learn. T. X. Hammes retired from the Marine Corps in July 2005 after thirty years of service. He received his Ph.D. in modern history from Oxford University and is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University, and author of The Sling and the Stone: On War in the 21st Century.

From One Who Was There

I have just finished this book. Based on the descriptions and some comments, I was ready to seriously criticize many of the statements. I need not do so. I would like to clear some points. No comment on the descriptions of the Brigade actions other than they are as they have been written before. Let me state that I served with H&S Co.1stBn.,5thMar.in the Brigade. The 'myth'that we were led by experienced World War 2 veterans was very real to us. We 'Green' troops (I was a Sgt.but green), only knew that the Staff NCOs and most officers above 2ndLt. had served in the war. That was all we needed to know. Whether they had seen combat or not never entered our minds. I guess that's the Marine Ethos, Culture or whaever you want to call it. They were our leaders, they had served in the War. We knew that Col. Newton had been a POW. I did not know about the lack of combat experience until I read this book. Amazing, from the way they fought their commands, it's no wonder we believed they were experienced combat leaders.
Mr Hammes makes a big point of the limited training during the 1949/1950 Winter. That is very true, as the 5thMar had just been organized in October. The only large operation I remember from that period was the airlift to San Nicholas Island. However there was a substantial trained 'cadre' on hand when the Brigade was formed. Many of us had been with the Division since 1947. I joined 1/6 in Sept. 1947. In October that became BLT-6, 2/6 became BLT-7 (BLT-6 became 1/5, 7 became 2/5 in 1949). From that point on through 1948 and 1949 we were constantly in the field or participating in amphibious operations, real or simulated, MajGen.Erskine made sure of that. Granted, there was turnover as men were discharged. I don't recall the turmoil of 'Summer transfers'. That was probably an officer thing, because we did have at least three battalion commanders that I can recall before Col.Newton. If I recall correctly one was LtCol.H.P.Crowe.
All in all, a fine book though.
EDIT- I'd like to add one more item. During the dark days of '48'49 when the fate of the Corps was being argued in upper echelons, there were many discussions in the barracks. Primary among these were what were to be the troops options. We (PFCs, Cpls and Sgts)generally felt there were only two. We would be released from service or absorbed into the Army. The second option was not acceptable. We were prepared to DESERT rather than serve in the Army. Some had made inquiries about the French Foreign Legion. We felt the situation very seriously, but we never mentioned any of our thoughts to our senior NCOs.

All Marines please note:

I titled my review of this book for all marines(no exes here!) because it really explains the ethos of the marines. The Pusan Perimeter was truly a last stand and the Marines came through. I was in a long time ago(56 to 59) and recall the true austerity that was (and probably still is ) true; Korean War bulk rations (stew etc) in the mess hall years after the war and no frills at all. Dr. Hammes book tells in detail the reason for this thrift. The Marine leadership Knew they would be called, and knew the cupboard was bare.. it was essential to save every asset to be ready. The combat load for Guadalcanal comes to mind when you read of the preparations for Korea and how all elements of the Corps came together to do what would be impossible for any other organization. The book is not an easy read,Dr Hammes includes a lot of scholastic research; but is well worth the effort. I began to understand many things that simply were not clear to a 18 year old kid in 1956. If you are a marine(even an old timer) or wish to be a Marine, the saga of the Marines at the Pusan Perimeter is essential reading. I spent 3 years in Pusan in the late 80s as an army civilian employee and the history of this area was particularly interesting. I knew of the perimeter, but not of the extraordinary effort of what were actually average Marines. Great stuff! read the book and thank thos guys for their accomplishment.

An excellent book on the USMC from 1945-1950

This book is as much about the organizational and doctinal evolution of the US Marine Corps between the end of World War II and the beginning of the Korean War. It is as well written and well researched as it is illuminating. I highly recommend it.

Historical Apologetics

This is an excellent resource by Josh McDowell that deals with the historical evidences for Christianity. McDowell covers evidence for the Old and New Testaments, archaeology, historical evidence for Jesus Christ (outside of the Bible), as well as many great quotations from both Christian and secular authorities. McDowell does a fine job of arranging the content in a clear and coherent manner. The material is arranged in a point by point format, and there is also several charts. I think this will be a valuable resource for your library. Highly recommended.

Evidence for Christianity

This work (compendium, really) was not intended to be read straight through. It was intended to bring together the basics of the evidence for the Christian faith. All of the historical evidence cannot be contained in one book, and the author does not try. He instead lays out a logical outline that helps the reader find what he's looking for, and gives easily-understood information and excellent citations of the top scholars, secular and Christian, in that particular area.

Although there is enough material for a lifetime of discussion and argument in this book, the reader is warned by McDowell that the evidence he has pulled together is not the primary focus. That focus should not be on winning arguments by throwing out evidence, but on the valid questions people bring to the table in their spiritual journey, and how the evidence can help address those questions. For the seeker, then, this book represents a treasure trove of sources to investigate on one's own or with a friend.

For the Christian layman, if approached as intended, this book will be a wonderful resource for answering specific questions concerning historical evidences for the Bible and Christianity. It is not intended to teach one how to debate non-Christians. It will be very helpful, though, in addressing the distressing lack of historical knowledge about Christianity so prevalent in our churches and society at large today.

I find this book continually open on my desk as I prepare papers, lessons for Sunday School, or Bible study. The beauty of this book is that I don't have to read several pages in order to jump into the author's stream of thought. This book should be on every pastor's and lay leader's bookshelf.

This book should be a basic part of everyone's personal library.

So many times we hear about skeptics of Christianity and/or the Christian rant and rave on YouTube-like sites and various discussion boards. Some skeptics have already made their mind up because they were hurt by someone in the past. Therefore arguing is therapeutic for such people. However if you are a person who desires honest answers and technical/detailed evidence, which goes beyond the noise of semantic bantering and false analogies typical of many "so-called" free thinkers, you will love this book. This book should be a basic part of everyone's personal library. So much powerful evidence to make even the most outspoken skeptics of Christianity into some of its most ardent defenders and become devoted followers of Christ. The exhaustive amount of archeological finds, historical accounts, and ancient cultural evidence presented by this book debunks a myriad of objections proliferated by the academic elites within our secular universities by presenting just raw evidence and facts. While bible skeptics invent allegations and devise speculations that were never supported by the archaeological evidence, this book methodically supplies real evidence and hard data that would hold up in a court room. If you once considered yourself a Christian but now have labeled yourself an atheist or agnostic because you thought Christianity was just a bunch of "made-up stories" and is not supported by any real evidence, you will be pleasantly surprised that it is those supporting facts and hard evidence presented by "Evidences for Christianity" that set Christianity apart from every world religion and the religion of atheism.

Those who claimed see the risen Christ and His ascension would not put their lives on the line if they actually knew it was not true. Those who analyze the vast amount of prophetical fulfillment wrought by Christ, and acknowledge the fact that He violated Hebrew culture and expectations of what their messiah should do by NOT SEEKING to conquer the Roman Empire, will find it difficult to convince even themselves that these JEWISH converts would have just "made up" the story about Jesus when even those who persecuted Christians not only verified Jesus' existence but even confirmed what those early Christians believed about Him and the sufferings they faced for those beliefs.

From Zero to Scripting in a Quick 100 Pages!

Succinctly:

In less than 100 pages, the author gets you up and running with [Bash] shell scripting. The entire book is precise, clear, and well structured. There is no divergence from the topic or the lessons, only short tips on common errors, style, and convention. In some cases I did look elsewhere to figure somethings out, but that was my own need for differentiated instruction. As such, I enrolled in the author's course on Udemy, which is cheap (link below).

If, like me, you get distracted by implementation details and are looking for a book that will teach you shell scripting from scratch quickly (or quickly tie a bunch of disparate knowledge together), then this book is for you! I also highly recommend the Udemy course in addition to the book.

I will recommend this to anyone having the same problem as me with more traditional [Bash] scripting tutorials, which is that they have some amount of divergence from actual shell scripting. While I really am interested in things like Processes, Streams, and File Descriptors; I get really caught-up in the implementation side of things. I can focus on implementation later, as I progress in knowledge.

Well presented and complete book.

I am not new to shell scripting. I've been doing it for 20 years and have felt quite confident in it.

Reading this, of course I found plenty that I knew already but there were gaps in my knowledge that I did not realize. This book is thorough in covering shell scripting and presents the material in an approachable and practical way.

I highly recommend this book for new and experienced shell coders.

Great book for beginners

Great book for learning shell scripting! I've learned so much by following all the examples and excises. It is kind of shallow but it is perfect for beginners like me. I've finished reading it and now am comfortable writing simple bash script. Ready to re-visit all the chapters.
