It's been two years since the writing of the first edition of Java Design. Java is growing up nicely and is gaining widespread acceptance in many industries around the globe. All of our workshops and mentoring are with Java projects now, an exciting transition from the "just getting started" times of two short years ago. In the first edition, we set out to write a book on design rather than programming. We did this for several reasons. One, we are designers at heart; we architect and shape large software systems for a living and truly love what we do. Two, we realize that there are hundreds (and hundreds) of Java programming books today-and that we have little to add to that genre. Three, we seek to write books that have lasting value, and so, did our best to insulate valuable design content from the evolution of Java and related technologies. The first edition has stood the test of time. While some Java programming books have gone through as many as four editions, Java Design has continued as a best-seller for two years running. The biggest visual change is the second edition's complete transition to UML notation. We've worked with UML (currently version 1.2) for some time now on real projects. Good Design Book

This book is about design, and is targeted towards readers who have some familiarity with design patterns but need more experience and want to see how to apply these tools using Java.

Regarding the negative reviews, I think the problem is that people with insufficient background are missing the point of the book. The publisher is partly to blame by placing buzzwords like enterprise beans and swing packages on the cover, whereas these are only tangentially touched upon in the text.

The readers who said they're decent Java hackers (that already suggests a person that won't understand design concepts), and people who thought the book spent too much time explaining inheritance and interfaces, just missed the point. The book wasn't explaining these concepts, but rather how to design using these concepts. The authors are guilty of assuming some OOD background from their readers. This book is not for beginners, though some beginners will get a lot out of it.

Don't miss the point!

Ok, there seems to be some serious inconsistensies between one reviewer and the next. Some say this book is one-star trash, others say it's a five star gem. Weird, eh?
I needed some serious design guidance at my first real work (not in school-class anymore with a teacher nearby). At first I decided not to buy this book because of some of the bad reviews. I bought couple of other books and got nowhere. Now I read this book too and wham was I surprised! This book is excellent.
I find it very obvious now that the persons who gave this book bad reviews were either not good/experienced programmers at all, thus they didn't notice the actual points the authors were trying to convey at times, or the readers just plain read this book too fast with too little thought. It is easy to read this book without actually thinking, because the book does not look very dry or academic. It lacks the "aura of seriousness" just like the author's other book on Color UML, which some people mistakenly dismiss as somewhat of a childrens' book.
This book is NOT about inheritance. It is NOT about interfaces. It is NOT about notification. Nor about threads. Many people thought it was and, of course they already knew those aspects from any basic Java book. This book is about DESIGNING a program using those features. Every chapter cuts the aspects you have to consider about the topic, into a handful of clear guidelines. Every chapter summarizes listing those guidelines at the end of the chapter. If you make the mistake of just reading through, "Aha, yeah, of course... nice, seems smart..." you don't really learn to use them. When you have read this book, go back to design your software. Now, at every step go through all the chapter summaries an APPLY all the guidelines to every design step you make. Then you'll slowly begin to learn. It will feel as if a lightbulb was lit inside your head. "Oh, THIS is how it's done!"
After some experience, you only need this book occasionally, after making the guideline design steps into routine habits. Your code will reflect this by being clear and very professional quality.
Also, someone complained that only some of the UML notation was used. This is again NOT a book on UML. It is a book on the design process/steps that Coad & Co feel are important. Nobody uses every aspect of UML. It is just too huge a notation language. You need to learn a subset that fits YOUR purposes. Some prefer the "Use Case Driven" approach, some "Feature Driven", and so on.

Java Design - the focus is on DESIGN

I read all of the reviews on this book, and found it disturbing how the ratings for this book could go high and low, with few in between.
I read the book, and found it helped me personally in my efforts with developing in Java. The KISS (Keep it simple stupid) method will survive the test of time.
I kept thinking about the review disparities as I read the book. I think that the reviewers who gave low marks were looking for a different kind of book, that might be more related to Java coding tricks - not sure, as I cannot ask them. However this book focuses on program design, and the reviews on the high side focused on this - which is exactly what I was looking for.
I have programmed in Multiple languages over the last 20 years, and I have been learning Java for the last several months as part of my job. Object oriented programming is not a new concept to me. This book isolated the specifics of the Java languages in creating VERY usable classes within a design.
The book isolates 5 concepts to use in designing an Object oriented Java program, and lays out a solid set of rules that can be used for object oriented design even in languages other than Java.
This book uses UML in a clear and consistent manner that will also help clarify some UML ambiguieties for use in Java design - It clarified some UML ideas that other books expressed in highly convoluted ways (I have 3 other UML specific books) .
My issue with the book, is the software on the CD is not clear on its use, and added to the price without adding a lot of Value. The software on the CD is outdated and not possible to register. (you cannot even download a version that was mentioned on their website as of 07/2000 - the CD has version 2.2 and the mentioned software version on their website was 4.0 - but not available for download from togethersoft). If they cut out the CD and reduced the cost of this book it would be a much better value.
The content of the book, and its use of the Java "Interface" classes was excellent - not one of my dozen other Java books clarified this concept anywhere close to this book and it is on this topic that the book was of the greatest value to me.
I have recommended this to anyone needing to learn how to design their classes and programs - not how to code in Java.

About the Author
Frederick C. Hatfield, MSS, PhD, is Co-founder and President of the ISSA. Dr. Hatfield, (aka "Dr. Squat") won the World Championships three times in the sport of powerlifting, and performed a competitive squat with 1014 pounds at a body weight of 255 pounds (more weight than anyone in history had ever lifted in competition). Dr. Hatfield's former positions include an assistant professorship at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and Senior Vice President and Director of Research and Development for Weider Health and Fitness, Incorporated. Dr. Hatfield was honored by Southern Connecticut State University when they presented him with the 1991 Alumni Citation Award. He has written over 70 books (including several best-sellers) and hundreds of articles in the general areas of sports training, fitness, bodybuilding, and performance nutrition. He has been coach and training consultant for several world-ranked and professional athletes, sports governing bodies and professional teams worldwide. Dr. Hatfield qualified for the 1998 World Championships in Olympic Lifting and competed in the Masters Division.

good standard reference

I am not a powerlifter, but i weight train for fitness. I found this book to be very helpful in giving straightforward explanations of the importance of building a good strength base, and what exercises and approaches to use to achieve that. The different workout systems were clearly explained and the pictures and explanations of the exercises were clear. The diet information was also helpful and non technical. A nice addition to my fitness library (...).

I was a competitive powerlifter in college (never on the sauce), setting state records in the State of Alabama in the early to mid 1980's. I and my fellow powerlifters used this book as our primary source for increasing our individual lifts as well as our totals. Just looking at it today made me flash back to a time in my life when my strength was greatest.

I found this book extermely interesting and explanatory. Dr.Fred Hatfield (professionally known as Dr. Squat) presented the sport of powerlifting and bodybuilding in a way that even the "weekend warriors" can understand. And I have had this book for about 10 years now.

The word "epic" in the subtitle is a tip-off that instead of a critical history of the American economy, this book is a celebration of it. Nothing wrong with that, especially when the tale's told breezily and accurately. In fact, Gordon (The Scarlet Woman of Wall Street) notes the many stumbles and the frequent foolishness and corruption that attended the nation's rise as an economic powerhouse. The larger story of success is, in fact, an extraordinary one. The trouble is that the American economy, like every other, bends much out of shape. It has always provided opportunity but always with too much inequality. A full history of the American economy would take this into consideration—in the past as well as the present, and Gordon's doesn't. Also, his book sometimes wanders off into irrelevant subjects, like the origins of the computer, but his grasp of the larger picture is sure and his prose bright. His chapter on Northern and Southern Civil War finances is a model of its kind. Those seeking an introduction to the general history of American economic power will find few better places to start, as long as they keep in mind that the nation's economy is not perfect, its benefits not unalloyed and its future domination of other economic powerhouses by no means assured.

Informative and enjoyable biography of the American Economy

Forests have been cleared for all the books that have been written on American History. While a few stand out from the pack, it is harder to find one that is fresh, interesting, and informative. "An Empire of Wealth" is all of those things and I strongly recommend it to you. Instead of being a military, political, or diplomatic history, John Steel Gordon has written an economic biography of our country. Do not mistake this approach for a dry treatise on economics. Far from it, this book is full of struggle, wild success, bitter failure, dislocation from wrenching changes in the economy due to the rise of new technologies, and marshalling resources for war.

He begins with the resource rich, but hostile wilderness that the early explorers found. The British made the first permanent settlement at Jamestown in what is now Virginia. The settlers had come for gold, found mica that they mistook for gold ore, and only 38 of the 105 survived the first winter. They kept coming from England and they kept struggling until they began to grow and export tobacco. Mr. Gordon then takes us on a fast paced, and amazing journey through the nation's founding, the movement west, our major wars, depressions, and the rise (and fall) of technologies such as steam, the railroads, machine supported agriculture, banking, and international trade. He ends the book with the horrible events we experienced on September 11, 2001.

Not only is this a fun read for anyone interested in American History, it would be a fine addition to the history readings for high school or college students. I especially like the author's honesty about the good and the bad in our history without making us the bad guys or the source of all pain and suffering on the planet. The reader comes away with a richer understanding of our history and feels good about our place in the world.

The book has a particularly nice bibliography in addition to the chapter notes. The readings offered in the bibliography would enrich anyone and I also urge you to look at them and read as many as you can. There is also an index to help you find certain topics. (I am a big fan of indexes and cannot understand any modern book without one - given how easily computers can create them and allow the editor to work them into something useful. Yet, we still get books without indexes because people think they will be more popular. What I want is useful!)

Very pleasantly surprised...

I purchased "Empire of Wealth" to address the glaring deficit in my knowledge of American history from an economic perspective. At the same time, I was dreading that this history would be boring and dry.

It is anything but. Gordon's effort is downright gripping, a compelling read chock full of information. Gordon has a knack for finding the most intriguing aspects of history and explaining difficult concepts in a manner that is quickly grasped. He is able to get to the heart of a concept without dragging along pedantic baggage. His writing is flawless and the raw historical material is seamlessly synthesized with consummate professionalism.

Gordon wraps his discussion of larger economic themes around the impact that invention, infrastructural development, and politics had on the burgeoning American economy. Examples include the Erie Canal, road and railroad building, the cotton gin, or the bessemer furnace.

From an "ideological" perspective, Gordon falls into the typical free-market, pro-deficit camp, which is consistent with the vast majority of economists today. However, he is far from dogmatic or simplistic, as some reviewers maintain. He acknowledges that unregulated capitalism is "red in tooth and claw" but that labor unions have overstepped their bounds, for example. Gordon devotes much time to the monopolies, oligopolies and collusion of post- Civil War America. At the same time, he fairly points out that not all political attempts to defang raw capitalism were the panaceas so keenly hoped-for.

A nice feature of Gordon's approach is his recognition of less-appreciated historical actors. For example, he gives the much-derided Hoover some credit for helping make possible the New Deal, insofar in that he tried every means possible short of big-government alphabet-soup to stem the growing depression. FDR would not have been able to introduce his heavy-handed methods, Gordon contends, without voter experience with Hoover's more gradualist and ultimately ineffective policies.

The author narrates far too much in "Empire of Wealth" to describe here in detail, but particularly stellar is Gordon's discussion of money supply, deficits, trade balances, the role of a national bank, Northern vs. Southern economies, income tax, the history and role of Wall Street and the pernicious boom-and-bust cycle engendered by Jeffersonian opposition to Hamilton's central bank.

"Empire of Wealth" surpassed all of my expectations. Gordon's effort is a surprisingly enjoyable and very necessary history that will not disappoint.

Wonderful, Well written, fast paced and informative

This has got to be one of the best history books that I have read. The book chronicles the start of the United States and the inovations and trials that made the nation great. I particularly enjoyed how it intertwined the innovations with information on the thoughts of politicians, businesmen, and others of the era, and how events such as slavery impacted the economics of the time.

This was a very well written book. I initially picked it up from the library, and then purchased a copy to add to my library.

Great Book!

Having read many versions of the Bible over the years, I'm finding this book to be very enjoyable because instead of writing in verse numbers and archaic language, this is in English and written as a story. It's good to read this in narrative form because it explains some of the battles and merciless killings and who did what to whom. I'm not commenting on the content, just the format in which it is written. This is a fabulous adjunct to the Holy Bible and I highly recommend this book as an addition to your ancient books library.

About the Author
Larry Correia is hopelessly addicted to two things: guns and B-horror movies. He has been a gun dealer, firearms instructor, accountant, and is now a very successful writer. He shoots competitively and is a certified concealed weapons instructor. His first novel, Monster Hunter International, is now in its sixth printing, and has been followed by Monster Hunter Vendetta, Monster Hunter Alpha, and Monster Hunter Legion. Correia s previous novels in the Grimnoir Chronicles series were Hard Magic and Spellbound. With USAF military ordnance expert Mike Kupari, he has co-authored two novels in a military adventure series, Dead Six and Swords of Exodus. Correia resides in Utah with his very patient wife and family.

Fun Anthology

After reading and enjoying the first Space Eldritch anthology, I eagerly bought the second one the day it became available. I've spent the last few days reading it, and I liked Space Eldritch II even more than the first. Several authors whose work I usually enjoy appeared here, namely Larry Correia, Steve Diamond, Howard Tayler, and Eric James Stone. As I expected, they delivered, with some excellent and creepy cosmic horror.

In addition, I've now been exposed to the mind-shattering insanity that the other authors I wasn't familiar with came up with, who one and all did a great job with their stories. I was thoroughly entertained, and this is coming from a guy who usually isn't all that big a fan of space fiction. So to keep my interest from beginning to end is saying a lot.

Excellent work, fellas. Hope to see you all again in Space Eldritch III.

This is madness!

The basic formula for writing a Space Eldritch story: create an awesome space oriented setting, give your characters something to live for, and then destroy it all with a big bad Elder beastie.

Hopefully this becomes an annual thing. This followup has a few direct sequels and a couple new writers. It was great to further explore the ramifications of the revisited settings. All the stories were great, my particular favorites this time were Eric James Stone's The Humans in the Walls and Howard Tayler's Fall of the Runewrought. There at the end Tayler achieves a musicality of language that matches the madness of the situation and finds the beauty in the horror.

Not as scary as it should have been.

This should have been a real rip-snorter but sadly wasn't as scary as it could have been. Think about it: H. P Lovecraft-style goings-on in outer space? They say no one can hear you scream out there! Most of these fell way short of the scream factor for me. There were a few exceptions such as "A Darklight Call'd On The Long Last Night Of The Soul" in which terraforming goes badly awry, and "Seed," that gave a hard and nasty twist to the old idea that Mars needs women. One thing that I found amusing about these stories was something that perhaps only a native Utahn like myself would notice, namely that most or perhaps all of the authors are Mormons and mostly based in Utah. How did I know? Well, "The Queen In Shadow" gave it away pretty badly. So if the idea of H. P. Lovecraft in space and filtered through a sometimes too obvious Mormon point of view sounds fun to you, buy it. If not, run like Cthulhu's tentacles are after you!
