Very in depth, but very dry reading. But, where else can you get this kind of information? If your trying to build any kind of machine or equipment, this series of books will show you mechanisms you never would have thought of on your own.

Dated and overly verbose and unexciting writing and illustrations

I have a rather complete collection of this type of books by many authors.
Many other series and individual books cover the same material but in ways which,
at least for my taste, are more interesting reads and reviews.
So this series of books just doesn't draw me to use it as review or reference information
as do some of the much more engagingly written books and series.
If other better competition did not exist, this would seem excellent.

Farming As A Cultural System

Though his qualitative studies of culture are more famous, "AI" is probably Clifford Geertz's most influential empirical work. It presents 2 main concepts: first, agricultural involution, a significant form of intensification but which may not bring actual development; and second, the divide between irrigated and swidden (slash & burn) farming. He develops these ideas with clarity and authority, enough to have inspired many comments and some revision, but the book's core remains permanently valuable. Both concepts have applications beyond Indonesia and wet-rice regions, and his historical approach provides essential time depth. Clearly Geertz's 1950s sojourn in the Indies was among the most fruitful fieldwork stints ever, producing a raft of classic books and essays. "The Religion of Java" is merely one among these, while F. Bray, "The Rice Economies" is very useful for context.

INHUMANS BLENDS THE BEST OF COMICS AND SCI-FI!!!

The Inhumans by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee is an incredible work. Told in 12 chapters, the story takes a bit of time to unfold and new readers will need a while to familiarize themselves with all of the characters. But once these two areas are handled...get ready for a fun ride.
It's impossible to describe the depth of this story. What other writers would present as a simple battle between government soldiers and a race of super-powered beings...Paul Jenkins pulls so much more from. There is slavery, penance, insanity, forgiveness, shame, understanding, heroism, loyalty, blind loyalty, manipulation, emancipation, love, and then there is family.
What makes The Inhumans work so well beyond the immense story is the uniqueness of the characters. The race of inhumans each have their own individuality expressed in their dialogue, their actions, and most powerfully in their appearence. What we might view as deformed...they would view as beautiful...two worlds that meet through a mirror (a symbol that is touched upon in the narrative). Pages could be written about these characters but then that would spoil the read and discovery so I'll confine mine to two characters.
TRITON - In what is probably the strongest chapter of the book, this character reflects back on his witnessing of the sinking of the Lusitania. It was his first encounter with humans in a positive light and lead him to think and rethink his thoughts on these creatures of a different race. The paintings of Triton standing on the decks of the Lusitania in present day are haunting.
BLACK BOLT - The king of the Inhumans who is not permitted to speak because his vocal cords can decimate mountains. He is also not permitted thought balloons because that would rob the character of so much. With the powerful king we have a character that will make you think. The weight of his people rests on his shoulders, and because of his complete lack of dialogue we are kept in the dark as to his motivations just as his closest family members are. Here is a character that could not exist in any other medium save the realm of the comic book (graphic novel to the elite). I found myself staring at every panel with this wonderful character present. The embrace between brothers Black Bolt and 'Mad' Maximus was especially gripping.
All in all I can not praise Inhumans enough. It has a creative energy that helps it stand apart from the typical superhero storyline. Much like each citizen of Attilan, there will never be another story like Inhumans.
Will you love it on the first read? Maybe not. Will you think about it when it's all over...definately. Will you want to return for another read?

This is easily one of the top 5 graphic novels I have ever read (and I have read quite a few of them). I'll keep this short and say that both the story and the art are breath-taking. Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee basically made a name for themselves with this series. It shines a new light on the so-called "superheroes," The Inhumans. More about politics, evolution, and power than any real superheroics, The Inhumans is not to be missed.
One other note -- 9 year olds will be completely lost in this story. This is definitely NOT a children's book, not because of content, but for sophistication. It's insulting to all graphic novel readers for Amazon to label them as children's books simply because of their medium.

A real treat.

While I have read Marvel Comics for a good portion of my life, my acquaintance to the Inhumans was only through the cursory exposure from various X-Men storylines. I purchased the TPB mostly because of positive reviews and an admiration of Jae Lee's art. Boy am I happy that I did.
This work serves as a superb demonstration of what the comic book can achieve as an art form. The multiple story arcs all hold the reader's interest well. The writing is tight and tells a surprisingly complex story in 12 issues with few wasted words/frames. Jenkins manages to introduce the book's characters and backgrounds in a natural, uncontrived manner, which is a rare feat in this medium.
The artwork is a pure joy. Jae Lee's style fits the material and sets the mood perfectly. The amount of detail in each frame, especially involving facial expressions, is remarkable and goes a long way to drive the storyline.
If I have one criticism, it would be that certain elements of Jenkins' writing style are overused throughout the book and become slightly irritating. Still, this book easily ranks as one of the best TPBs I have ever picked up.

The nightly appearance of meandering zombies fills a farm family with many questions!

How will a family living on a farm deal with the fallout of nightly visitations from zombies? When John and Ruth Bell discover the row lines in their vegetable garden pulled down, they assume its livestock getting loose at night. It's only when John notices messy footprints that he realizes it must have been a person. Several nights later, while latching his pens and fences, John sees a zombie dragging itself across his yard. Instead of panicking, he calmly tells his wife later on that night.

He hadn't felt threatened by what he saw, so he decides to tell his three children the next day over breakfast. His two boys display shocked expressions, but his youngest child, Cecilia, is unimpressed. She's not sure what a zombie is. John explains to her it's a person who's died but who has come back to life minus his or her soul. Cecilia asks if she can tell her teacher about the zombie her father saw, but John tells all three children to keep the information to themselves to avoid a panic breaking out. That night, he, his wife Ruth, and their oldest child, Seth, witness several zombies stagger through their vegetable garden.

Mr. Elkins and the Zombies of Elbert County isn't a typical story about flesh-eating zombies. Author Thom Adorney has written a tale about meandering deceased individuals looking for a second resting place and the compassion a family in addition to several residents in the community exhibit for the zombies' plight. When Cecilia draws a picture of the first zombie her father saw, how will the revelation impact a rural community? When a spectator recognizes one of the zombies, will she be able to help him find a final resting place?

Interesting plot, but left me unsatisfied.

An interesting short tale that was certainly entertaining, yet left me unsatisfied with it's lack of information on why there were zombies shuffling by the gardens in the first place. I read on hoping to have some answers, but not much was provided. This was probably not the focus for the author though it is always the focus for me as a fan of zombie genre.

Regardless of how I felt once I wrapped this short read up, I can not deny how interesting this story was. It kept you curious and fascinated with the family and community dynamics of this town. Not to mention, sympathetic to the poor souls that shuffled on by to some unknown destination.

Engaging Read

There's nothing worse than zombies running amok except when they're walking through your field.

This was a fun story and while not of the scary type of zombie tale, it had some great characters, and of course, the children who couldn't keep a secret. I liked the setting of this story and I think Mr. Adorney did a great job describing the area where this tale took place. I could actually see the zombies dragging their feet along the ground as I turned the pages. The ending surprised me and this was a tale I wished would have been a little longer so the author could have played out the plot some more.

If zombies are your thing then it's one worth checking out.

About the Author
Thomas N. Bradbury earned his BA in psychobiology from Hamilton College, his MA in general psychology from Wake Forest University, and his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois. Each year he teaches a large undergraduate class and small honors seminar on intimate relationships. In 2000, he was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award from the UCLA Department of Psychology.

Benjamin R. Karney earned his BA in psychology from Harvard University and his MA and PhD in social psychology from UCLA. Ben has received numerous awards for his teaching, including a Distinguished Teaching Award from the UCLA Department of Psychology in 2011. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in intimate relationships.

and it was one of the best classes I have ever taken

I took a class with Professor Bradbury and Professor Karney in college at UCLA, and it was one of the best classes I have ever taken. Not only, it was one of the best "life-guidance" directives I have ever had.

I still have my course reader from the class, his preliminary draft to his first edition of Intimate Relationships, that is how important his values and teachings were to me. I went ahead and got the updated version to read again.

This novel will change the way you interact with people. Must read for all human beings. Crucial information on how we interact with one another.

I ordered this book as a text book for a college course. It has good readability so one can be comfortable ordering it for personal enrichment or as a self help book. I think most people will be able to relate to the contents. The chapters have frequent summaries of key points which is useful for study.

This is an interesting read! I used it in my college intimate relationships class it is full of useful insight into relationships and their inner workings.
