About the Author

Reiner Dumke is since 1994 a full professor in software engineering at the university of Magdeburg. His research interests include SW metrics, measurement programs, tools, web security and performance engineering. He is speaker of the german Informatics Society (GI) Expert group on Metrics. He has published and lectured extensively on SW metrics and related topics.

Christof Ebert is Director Software Coordination and Process Improvement of Alcatel in Paris, France. He drives R&D innovation and effectiveness programs within Alcatel. Before, he lead the biggest Alcatel Business Unit to CMM L3, achieving substantial quality improvements and cycle time reduction. Dr. Ebert is IEEE Software associate Editor-In-Chief and serves as keynote speaker and on program committees of various software engineering conferences.

Manfred Bundschuh is President of DASMA e.V., the German metrics organisation, as well as appointed Professor for Project Management and Teamwork at the University of Applied Sciences, Cologne, Dept. of Informatics and IT Quality Manager in AXA Service AG, Cologne. Manfred Bundschuh is author and editor of several books and more than 40 publications.

Andreas Schmietendorf works as competence manager for system- and software development in the information technology department of Deutsche Telekom AG. As chief architect within the development center Berlin Dr. Schmietendorf is mainly responsible for integration- and migration-projects. He is an active member in the German society of computer science (GI) and the Central Europe Computer Measurement Group (CECMG). Furthermore Dr. Schmietendorf teach as guest-lecturer at the University of Magdeburg and FHTW Berlin (University of applied science).

Interesting and needed book....

Fortunatelly there are new books coming about this topic. In this case, the books settles a very good ground defining the purposes and goals that a software measuremet program should cover.

I differentiate two clear parts:

A) In a first part (from chapter 1 to 11) the authors cover from the need of a improvement program of this nature to the kind of tool (even defining its architecture) to support this initiative, including some incursions in the basics of some particular metrics (defects tracking, reliability, project managing, etc), but without the mathematics that hide the basics ideas of other books.

B) In the second part, from chapter 12 to 15, they exposed the application of these kind of improvement initiatives in some big companies. In some sense, these last chapters are isolated and included like separated papers.

Special mention for the last chapter where can be found many of the most reputated organizations (international) related to the software metrics as well as the basic standards associated to the software improvement.

Compared to these other recent books about this same topic, I found very weak their treatment about the kind of statistical analysis that is possible to perform (and desiderable) with the software metrics. And also, the tools to perform the analysis (they only mention: Excel and SPSS) when other open-source software (like R: [...]) is capable of doing an equivalent job (if not better) that these tools.

In the very positive side, I found very insteresting and ilustrative the great level of detail they provide in terms of benchmarking for the most basic metrics (Chapter 9. Defect Detection and Quality Improvement).

Summary: Good book, in a once again emerging and needed topic.

Solid, Enjoyable Read for Radiohead Fans

If you are a serious fan of Radiohead, you should definitely get this book. I found it quite enjoyable to listen to the song corresponding to the section that I was reading. For the most part, it is very informative and provides a lot of Radiohead trivia. There is some speculation from the author, but it is clearly stated as such and is certainly outweighed by interviews, etc. The section about Hail To The Thief is not as full as the others, but it's still interesting.

If you're already thinking about buying this book, you probably love Radiohead. If so, you will enjoy this book. Buy it.

The books in this series partly give the stories behind the inspiration and recording of various artists' songs, but a lot of the text just describes the music as it sounds. This is an exceptional book nonetheless, and I would recommend to any Radiohead fan.

Excellent summary of cultural war

This is written from the point of view of an intellectual well versed in Western philosophy and religion but who is also well versed in American Indian Native religion. The chapters detail the stark differences between what he develops as warring cultures as he step by step describes the impact of Greek philosophy on Christian religion and how that molds the sense of individuality viewed as the modern individual in the West today. In contrast to this he describes the nature of community as seen through the eyes of natives and native religions that are land based instead of abstract conceptual systems. I find it interesting because other books such as Charles Taylor's "The Sources of the Self" make much the point he does in describing the nature of the modern individual and what brings it about. We might also see this in other books that deal with the subject. Of importance are several insightful points regarding the difficulties native communities face and how they have reacted to these culture wars. For example, regarding suicide he says, "Many people are trapped between tribal values constituting their unconscious behavioral responses and the values they have been taught in schools and churches, which primarily demand conforming to seemingly foreign ideals. Alcoholism and suicide mark this tragic fact of reservation life. People are not allowed to be Indians and cannot become whites. They have been educated, as the old-timers would say, to think with their heads instead of their hearts." (p 242) On the chapter between Natural and Hybrid Peoples he describes the Native religions as based on a sense of place - the importance of the land where "The soil you see is not ordinary soil - it is the dust of the blood, the flesh, and the bones of our ancestors. We fought and bled and died to keep other Indians from taking it, and we fought and bled and died helping the Whites. You will have to dig down through the surface before you can find nature's earth, as the upper portion is Crow." (p 148 quoting Curley, a Crow Indian Chief). (p. 247) "Education and Religion apparently do not mix."

Biting Critique of Modern Popular Christianity

This is a fascinating book. The critique of many of modern Christianity's shortcomings is accurate and relevant, though I think Mr. Deloria has a little too much fun ridiculing Christianity's efforts to make itself more relevant to modern life. Any religious thought system should be allowed to advance, and some of the things he brings up are not things to be ridiculed, but advancements to be commended.
His case for the Native American point of view, however, is very compelling. It is a philosophy that I find myself being drawn to very strongly. I have recently discovered that I have Native American blood in my veins, and have become very interested in finding out more about this part of my heritage.
The biggest two problems with this book, at least for me, are thus: 1) Mr. Delaria fails to provide those of us living in the city with any way to honor the ways of Native religion, tying it so strongly to place that those of us that can't get there are left pretty much on our own. Perhaps this is missing the point, and what he is saying is that a Native viewpoint is not compatable at all with modern city life. But if this is the point, then what hope is there of a more compassionate, earth-centered point of view taking hold? And 2), amid all of the statements that ring with truth, there are wild stories about "space astronauts" creating humans to be their slaves, and other such seeming nonsense. Delaria has many fine, valid points to make in this book, and these diversions into wild, unprobable speculation only serve to weaken his otherwise unassailable thesis.

Changes the worldview

This book has been an eye-opener for this Pagan, former Catholic, to read. As a historian I've known about the Christian horrors he relates, but not about the way native tribes envision their spirituality. I thought, since they were pagan, they had individual beliefs that they never argued or fought over, but instead, each tribe, as a communistic unit, shares one belief, and he compares them, perhaps appropriately to Jews who live their beliefs.

What he does not do is explain for me how they were able to be converted, just that some of them were, and did not go into how effectively this tore his people apart. Or did he? The book is not set up in any really logical order, which tends to allow him to rehash the same material.

I also see room for argument in here that if he sees tribes able to allow whites into their community for being pro-communistic way of life, why is it so hard for them to find that there are whites who willingly see things their way today? I would appreciate seeing another tribal writer come out and say, in more current terms where tribal leaders seem themselves headed today and how other willing members of the community can help - all in favor of restoring the common balance of nature.

That is the underlying theme of the book, after all, although he spends more time against Christianity than pro Communal spirituality.

I LOVED RYAN!

First, I loved Lietha's "The Doctor and the Assassin" book. My favorite character of all time was Nick Castile, so I was looking for another book that had Nick's characters as the leading men. I took a chance on Retribution,. And wouldn't you know it -- Ryan was a really close second to Nick as far as his characteristics, looks, etc. I really got into this book. (Spoiler alert): close to the end of the book, Lietha actually did bring back Nick and his brother for a short time! Fantastic! Comes to find out, they (Nick and Ryan) worked together in the past. I loved it! It has lots of action, and romance. Keep up the good work Lietha! Write about more characters like Nick and Ryan! I'll be purchasing those books!

Wonderful story! Action, mystery and romance. Oh my!!

The hero is hot, a well oiled "machine" of a man who comes to realize that he is human after all and that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The heroine is a strong woman, who has been neglected and betrayed by the ones who should love her the most.

This story is action packed, a flair of mystery and many twists and turns. There are some hot love scenes too! They save each other in different ways, but you have to read the story to find out how. You won't be disappointed

Great characters, great storyline. I loved the surprise tie-in with another book...I won't spoil it :). Good HEA and great alpha male! I only wish the epilogue was further in the future to give you a taste but what was said was good.

Focus on the positive and avoid the negative

I am the type of person who neither believes everything wholeheartedly, but nor do I automatically reject things just because I don't understand them or cannot see it with my own eyes. If one can read this book without bias it can be very entertaining whether you are a believer in religion or not. I don't know whether what the Warrens say is true or not. I suspect, like most things in life, the facts lie somewhere in the middle. Regardless of whether you believe everything they say one can take some wisdom from this book just the same. The Warrens implore us to avoid the negative in life and focus on the things and people that bring light, love and joy into the world. Fact is we don't need to go looking for demons in the closet to experience evil in our day to day lives. Idle gossip from coworkers, neighbors and friends, jealousy, spite and petty cruelty are all around us in our day to day lives just waiting to suck us in and drag us down. Don't give evil energy and negative influences even a crack to worm their way into your life. Do not go searching for negative energies, and when you do sense them listen to your intuition and flee far away. Most of the victims in this book went searching for trouble by blindly dabbling in things they did not understand and naively thinking they could trust everything the "spirits" were telling them. Listen to what the Warrens have to say and if you take nothing else from this book remember that evil often lies in the most banal of things in life and your best armor against the negative and evil is to keep pure thoughts and focus on those things that espouse the positive and affirm life.

I walked away after reading this book with a firm conviction to go forth in life and weed out those things and people that were dragging me down even if those things sometimes reside in my own psyche. I decided to appreciate and respect life more and to do my best everyday to do my part to bring positive energy into the world

Amazing Accounts and Practical Information From The Best In This Field

Gripping accounts of the work of Ed and Lorraine Warner. You'll not be able to put it down for a second, it's incredible. One of the lessons you cannot help but conclude from this mind-expanding account of their lives and work is that "reality" does not care what we think of it or our take on things. The spiritual world functions independently of all our brightest insights and cares not how we see it or what we think we know. Especially the dark side. Expect to be up all night reading these accounts. So much practical, helpful and insightful information here. I had to take breaks and then go back to it, but every word is a treasure.

Spooky reading!

I love reading the case files of Ed & Lorraine Warren! The first one I read was "The Demonologist", which I had years ago when I was in school. I was fascinated with the tales in there and it was where I was first introduced to "Annabelle."

These new editions are much better than the versions I had in the past, with cleaner print, easier on the eyes. Several have photos that are much more clear than some of the previous editions.

I am so glad these books are back in print, and in a pleasant, matching collection. Be sure to get all of them, and be ready for many chilling nights reading the spooky stories that will give you lots of restless sleep. :)

The "Vampire Clan" was a loosely knit gang of Southern U.S. teenagers who played at being outcasts and goths, and then pretended to be vampires. The twisted fantasies and dark mind of their young leader, Rod Ferrell, dominate The Embrace. Aphrodite Jones wastes no time in getting inside the troubled 16-year-old's head, detailing his elaborate delusions (he sometimes claims to be 500 years old; at other points, he was born 60,000 years ago and "sent to earth to destroy it") and his eerie abilities to control other troubled souls. With a Jim Jones-like knack for bizarre showmanship, Ferrell picked up followers and "true loves" with ease, then led his small, unmerry band on a mission from his home base in Kentucky to pick up yet another groupie--15-year-old Heather Wendorf--in Florida. The journey ended in violence in 1996, however, when Ferrell decided to kill Heather's parents with a crowbar. The group (Heather in tow) fled to New Orleans, where Rod promised his "vampire friends" would take them in; they were arrested a few days later. Ferrell, who now holds the record as the youngest inmate on death row, still insists he's the Antichrist.

Jones's account is rather spare, but feels balanced and honest. Like untold thousands of other American youths, Ferrell had the requisite bad childhood and unpleasant memories to later cause him both melancholy and grief. But unlike most of his peers, Rod Ferrell seems to have been born with a genius intelligence and the ability to memorize names, accents, and customs from different eras and places with ease, along with a talent to "perform" what he claimed to be. That he also happened to be deranged shouldn't be overlooked, but the real tragedy and concern here is that there might exist a rip in the fabric of our society large enough to allow healthy, normal teenagers like his group to fall through the tear and into the arms of animalistic hucksters like Rod Ferrell. --Tjames Madison

On November 25, 1996, in Eustis, Fla., Ruth and Richard Wendorf were found bludgeoned to death in their home, with their youngest daughter, Heather, 15, missing. Jones (Cruel Sacrifice, etc.) portrays Heather as a lonely girl whose desire to transcend her "mundane," privileged life brought her under the influence of a charismatic monster who introduced her to an underground world of teenagers dressing in black, practicing ritual bloodletting and dreaming of traveling to Paris and New Orleans. Was Heather part of a gruesome execution planned by self-described vampires or a brainwashed victim seduced by pack leader Rod Ferrell? Jones makes a case for the latter, minimizing Heather's involvement in the murders ("She was without an ego"). While Jones claims to have used "proven sources of journalistic research," she does admit to altering "certain details" and taking "certain storytelling liberties." Jones seems to think Ferrell was just born mean, and she turns him into a larger-than-life character, calling him "the embodiment of insanity." Her entire account suffers from psychological na?vet?, as she appears to believe whatever HeatherAwho stands to inherit half a million dollars from her parents' deathAtells her and dismisses those who contradict the girl, including Heather's own sister. Jones provides a good overview of the facts surrounding the murder and her prose glows with a voyeuristic intensity, but she comes off as so wholly biased in favor of Heather, "the victim," that her presentation lacks full credibility. With several best-sellers to her credit, including Cruel Sacrifice (1994), Jones returns with another expedition into teen true crime. The horror she investigates this time is the brutal murder of a husband and wife in a Florida suburb, perpetrated by Rod Ferrell, a magnetic, egocentric teenage vampire cultist, who lures a small group of troubled teens (among them the 15-year-old daughter of the murder victims) into a situation that forever changes their lives. The grisly circumstances are certainly right out of every parent's nightmare, with blood rituals, vampire role-playing, aberrant love, and dysfunctional family relationships, and it's the perfect stuff for true-crime writers. Unofortunately, Jones drops the ball. Although she draws on court records, news stories, and interviews to re-create the events leading up to and following the crime, her purple prose ("Only he could penetrate her inner sanctum"; "His strong arms made her melt"; "Rod filled her void"); clunky, confusing chronology; and reconstructed dialogue ("based on recollections of the participants") turn real-life tragedy into boring, almost absurd, melodrama. Expect some publicity-driven demand (and the inevitable TV movie), but most readers will find Jones much less satisfying than true-crime veterans Ann Rule (Bitter Harvest, 1998) and Joe McGinniss (Fatal Vision, 1983). Horrible tragedy and dull, dull, dull book

The back blurb of my copy of "The Embrace" claims "The Embrace will forever change the way we look at one of the fastest-growing religious movements in the country and its most vulnerable fold: our children."
Are they claiming Satanism or "vampirism" is one of the fastest growing religious movements? Since when? Or are they insinuating that modern day witchcraft = Satanism/vampirism. If that's the case someone really needs to do some homework. I sure hope the book is researched better than the back cover copy . . .
The Embrace is the author's pieced together account of a vicious true life crime perpetuated by a vicious, disturbed young man who believed he was immortal (among other wacked out theories). Rod Ferrell and his group of mindless followers are aimlessly traveling from Kentucky to Florida where Ferrell intends to add his ex-girlfriend Heather to his "coven", kill Heather's parents and steal their vehicle. The group then plans to head to New Orleans and crash with Ferrell's "vampire" friends. The sheep-like clan members don't take Ferrell's claims of murder seriously and laugh it off. Unfortunately, he wasn't kidding around and they find themselves accessories to a crime that is anything but funny.
I won't comment on how accurate this retelling of the events leading to the murder happens to be as I was completely unfamiliar with the case until now. The book reads like what I'm assuming it is: a collection of interviews pieced together by the author. The problem lies with the dull way the author presents her material. The book is extremely tedious and very repetitive and could've been trimmed by a hundred or more pages. This all makes for a very dull read for anyone not familiar with this case.

I knew she would messed this up.

Don't bother reading this book. I went to school with several of the characters in this book, the ones from Florida, and I was a friend of a couple of them. Aphrodite does a terrible job of writing this book, the story has no flow, and she revisits simplistic ideas, while breezing over major issues. There was more to the story than vampire novels and Goth music. Trying to explain Rod's action in that fashion is like trying to say, "Oh, well Hitler just had a bad family life and self-esteem issues."
The real question is how could sane people follow such a freak. I would suggest that you rent the movie "Vampire Clan" instead. I will cost less, it goes by quicker, and tells the story just as fully without any of Aphrodite's conclusions. Plus in the movie everyone looks a lot better than they did in real life.

Not a "Religion", a sick kid with a vampire fantasy life

This book is about a 16 American boy from Kentucky named Rod Ferrel, a Schizotypal wannabe "vampire" addicted to Anne Rice and Marilyn Manson music, who took his vampiric friends Scott, Charity, and Dana down to Florida where he used to live to basically kidnap his other friend Heather Wendorf and all go to the location of Anne Rice's "Vampire Chronicles", New Orleans, to live as an immortal coven for the rest of their eternal lifes. However, while in Florida, because Rod Ferrel was so stressed from escaping Kentucky, he killed Heather's parents with a metal crowbar in the process of liberating her and she didn't find out until later on the road. Her older sister Jennifer came home, found the dead parents, called the police, and Rod and his "coven" were arrested several days later, all convicted of murder and put in jail.

Sure, it may sound like an open-close case, but what makes it so interesting is two things...

1. The media really exploited this case as a way to slam the "Goth" culture, which T.V. knows nearly nothing about. Most of the emphasis they put on the case is that Rod Ferrel dressed and acted like his vampire character Vesago in his insane/immortal fantasy world. He was so insane and had such a Charles Manson/Jim Jones thing going with his friends, he made them all believe they were vampiric demons sent to Earth to open the gates of Hell. At times he sounds dillusional but intelligent, but at other times he just sounds like a misguided idiotic teenager, which he basically was. News and T.V. said he drank his victim's blood but the murders were actually not based on vampirism, but based suprisingly soley on stealing a car and not being arrested for that! So the actual crime wasn't a vampire sort of thing, it was a theft gone wrong of thing. The media though just because he dyed his hair black and wore all black he was a goth, but really he just had a highly disfunctional family and suffered from schizotypal personality disorder.

2. In the author's opinion, this double murder showcased a decline of moral and sweetness in the American youth, paticularly the alternative crowd. Indeed, she calls whatever this is, I'm guessing schizotypal disorder, a "religion", which implies it has something to do with Wicca/Pagan/Satanism, or some other alternative religion which isn't fair to groups of those crowds. They get enough crap from intolerant Christians enough, and don't like having an isolated sick, drugged up, bad seed teenager's crime being traced to them.

I recommend this book if you want to know about the case in great detail, what happened before the murders in Kentucky and Florida and how the coven came together, and after the murders and what happened at the trials. After reading the book, I felt sympathy for Ferrel, he was messed up and it sounds like his horrible mother had a very negative influence on him. I enjoyed reading about what Rod was tied up in while he was in Kentucky, and about how he almost went on a rampage there, got expelled from school, tried to kill his mom, drank his friend's blood, gained countless followers with his dark showmanship, and allegedly tortured cats and dogs. Buy it to get a good look at the possibilities of what can happen when unstable teenagers go absolutely out of control.

A wonderful experience to read

Well I just finished this ebook and I feel great. This is the follow up book to the author's free book Me! Me! Me! Which Inner Self is Running Your Life?, which describes the theory of selves. Essentially the theory of selves posit that there are several "selves" that make up our whole, and each of these selves have a particular set of characteristics. There is the fun loving "party animal", the flexible and conforming "chameleon" , the evaluative "judge" and so forth. We all differ in how these selves are exhibited in us.

The fascinating thing about this book isn't just the joy of the discovery of the selves, their characteristics, strengths/weaknesses and so on. But once you begin to "own" these parts of yourself you begin to come alive. It is really an enjoyable process. Once we begin to own these selves, it allows us to harness them to appropriate levels so that they are in essence being demonstrated in healthy magnitudes. This leads to greater harmony and greater self control, as well as greater self awareness.

The book describes 44 different selves, and also points out opposite selves for each one. The descriptions are detailed, interesting, and succinct. Never do you feel the descriptions are too verbose. It is also 53 pages long and I have to be honest it leaves you wanting more. That said I am really happy that I got to read this book. It was not only informational and illuminating, but a lot of fun.

This book will change your perspective, every working woman should read it!

I am excited to review this book because of the direct impact it had on my situation.
I am a working mom which is challenging in it's own right but to make it even more so, I decided to go into the construction industry. I had the attitude Kate talks about in her book that "they" will see how hard I work and reward me, or I didnt want "them" to think I was greedy or not like me so I didnt ASK for a lot. I have been working in this field for the past 20 years with that attitude. I had read all of the staple books, "How to Win Friends and Influence People", Nice Girls Dont Get the Corner Office", "Lean In", Dale Carnegie and Stephen Covey books, and many many more. Some of the things I read made sense and some I even applied. After reading Kate's book I immediately went out and bought 3 more copies, one for each niece and one for my daughter in law. While I really hate to sound like a stalker fan, I have to admit that I have been listening to Kate's book on audio every morning, on my commute, for the past month. It is giving me insight on a daily basis and I am making some rewarding changes to my thinking! Love, love, love it! In fact I recently told my mom that no other book as had this big of an impact on me since the Bible (dramatic I know).

Not Bad, But Her Original Career Guide ("Gutsy Girls") Was Better

Kate White is one of my favorite writers, of both fiction and nonfiction. I've read every one of her books. My favorite remains "Why Good Girls Don't Get Ahead... But Gutsy Girls Do," which was written back in the mid 1990s. Even today, nearly 20 years after it was published, I still find myself referring back to this classic career guide for women.

Kate's most recent career advice book, "I Shouldn't Be Telling You This," is sort of a follow-up to her earlier one, but not quite. While her first career book was written mainly for women in the early stages of their careers, "I Shouldn't Be Telling You This" is supposedly geared to women of all ages--from someone just out of school who's just starting her first job, to a mid-career professional who wants to climb the corporate ladder of success or perhaps reinvent herself, to someone who has already achieved a certain measure of success but doesn't want to be a slave to her job. The book is divided into three "Success" sections: How to Get It; How to Go Big With It; and How to Savor It. While there are some good tips in here, I found a lot of them to be rather shallow. The chapters are short and easy to read--but that's part of the problem. Each chapter is too short and nothing is covered in real depth. The strongest section is the first one, focusing on the early years of one's career. The second section is OK. But the final section, dealing with how to successfully juggle your job and your personal life, is the weakest link, in my opinion. The tips at the end are not particularly clever or unique, and the book ends quite abruptly. In fact, I was puzzled when I got to the last page. The book just ends, leaving me to wonder if a concluding chapter or something was edited out.

Ms. White has enjoyed a remarkable career in the fiercely competitive field of magazine publishing. Her success is quite impressive. My background is also in publishing (but I'm nowhere near as successful as Ms. White!), and she's someone I look up to. I met her once, and I'll always be impressed by how nice she was to go out of her way to speak with me (a complete stranger) and give me advice on navigating the world of publishing. "I Shouldn't Be Telling You This" isn't a bad book (I would give it 3.5 stars if I could). There's a little too much name dropping for my taste, but the writing is light and breezy, and you'll feel that Ms. White is having a one-on-one conversation with you, too. That said, however, I don't think it's nearly as good as her original career advice book. In hindsight, she might have been better off updating "Gutsy Girls," instead of writing this new stand-alone guide.

As a career coach and job search strategist, I admittedly scrutinize career-oriented books with a critical eye. There's just so much fluff and rehashed info in the world of career-oriented non-fiction.

But I was actually quite delighted by what I found within the pages of Kate White's new book! It's not only be an easy, engaging (and fun) read, more importantly, the book is filled with relevant, useful strategies and original information that will ACTUALLY help professional women who aspire to make big, impressive career leaps.

It was funny because, as I'm reading along ... nodding, nodding, agreeing, agreeing .... It occurred to me:

GOSH, I could have used this book 10 years ago! :) Any which way, it's a great read for anyone working to move up in business, but spot-on for women in their late '20s and early '30s who are ready to blossom in big ways.

About the Author
Karen Horney (1885-1952) was one of the most influential psychoanalysts of the twentieth century. Her books include Neurosis and Human Growth, The Neurotic Personality of Our Time, New Ways in Psychoanalysis, Our Inner Conflicts, Self-Analysis, Feminine Psychology, Final Lectures, and, as editor, Are You Considering Psychoanalysis?

Best Intro to Karen Horney's model of neurosis

This is the best introduction to Karen Horney's thinking about neurosis and how it can be healed. The book was written to propose the idea that people suffering from neurosis can do a lot of work on their own, with or without a therapist. Despite having been published in 1942 and written from just beyond the boundary of psychoanaylitic orthodoxy, her ideas are quite modern and relevant.

To find out if Horney's thinking resonates with you, begin by reading Chapter Two, The Driving Forces in Neuroses and the first part of Chapter Three covering the Stages of Understanding in Clare's analysis (pp. 35-82). (Clare is a rather remarkable woman whose work on herself inspired Horney to write this book. Her story is compelling and her issues are not the least bit out of date.) If you recognize yourself or others in these pages, proceed to Chapter Six, Occasional Self-Analysis (pp. 138-158) and Chapter Eight, Systematic Self-Analysis of a Morbid Dependency (pp. 173-224). These parts of this book will tell you whether you want to read more of Horney's books. I would recommend Our Inner Conflicts: A Constructive Theory of Neurosis as the logical next step.

The remainder of the book is primarily a defense of the notion that Self-Analysis is possible and desirable. Her intended readers here are her fellow professionals, whom she expects to be rather skeptical.

If Horney were writing today, I suspect that she would substitute Therapist for Analyst and Client for Patient in this book. In addition, she would not feel the need to point out the differences between herself and Freud, Jung, etc. Otherwise, her words are crisp and clear and could have been written today.
