"The authors have made classic samurai wisdom accessible to the modern martial artist like never before." -- Goran Powell, award winning author of Chojun and A Sudden Dawn
"It's fascinating stuff!" -- Steve Perry, New York Times bestselling author
"The precepts offer priceless advice to anyone." -- Kate Vitasek, University of Tennessee
"The five point perspective inspired deep introspection. I have been elevated to higher and deeper levels of personal and professional growth by reading this book." -- Laela Erickson, Senior Business Development Executive
Miyamoto Musashi (1584 - 1645) was arguably the greatest swordsman who ever lived, a legendary figure whose methods of thought and strategy have been studied and adopted across a wide spectrum of society, from martial artists to military leaders to captains of industry. The iconic sword saint of Japan was clearly a genius, yet he was also a functional psychopath--ruthless, fearless, hyper-focused, and utterly without conscience. Shortly before he died, Musashi wrote down his final thoughts about life for his favorite student Terao Magonojo to whom Go Rin No Sho, his famous Book of Five Rings, had also been dedicated. He called this treatise Dokkodo, which translates as "The Way of Walking Alone." The book you hold in your hands is the definitive interpretation of Musashi's final work.
Readers are oftentimes subject to a single perspective about what some famous author from the past had to say, yet we are more holistic here. This treatise contains Musashi's original 21 precepts of the Dokkodo along with five different interpretations of each passage written from the viewpoints of a monk (Wilder), a warrior (Burrese), a teacher (Smedley), an insurance executive (Christensen), and a businessman (Kane). Each contributor has taken a divergent path from the others, yet shares the commonality of being a lifelong martial practitioner and published author. In this fashion you are not just reading a simple translation of Musashi's writing, you are scrutinizing his final words for deeper meaning. In them are enduring lessons for how to lead a successful and meaningful life.

Review
"If this were merely a book by and for martial artists, it would still be interesting, but arguably not as important or even as provocative." -- Ron Breines

"Takes the refreshing approach of five modern people, from different backgrounds, offering you insights into what advice can help you versus which advice will sting you." -- Marc MacYoung

"We should argue what Musashi meant, particularly given more modern takes on morality and ethics. Read on, and make sure to bring an open mind." -- M. Guthrie

Excellent
By Loren W. Christensen
As their usual, Kane and Wilder have produced a wonderful book, this one on the genius or crazy man (pick either one and you're right), swordsman's extraordinary, Musashi.
There are many books written on the master but this one is unique in that 5 writers from very different backgrounds discuss what each of Musashi's 21 precepts mean to them in their lives during these modern times. Are there things to learn from their interpretations of precepts written in the 1600s before there were cell phones, Internet, and Facebook? Absolutely.
Each writer offers powerful insight to help the reader view these precepts differently than what appears at first blush and, in so doing, apply some, probably not all, to their own lives.

Psychopath? Really?
By Far Ranger
Very annoying that Musashi is continually referred to as a psychopath. Was he? Perhaps, since every samurai n Japan was trying to emulate the type of warrior Musashi was, were they a country of psychopaths? I doubt it. And if being totally focused on violently ending an enemy, would the authors conclude that every American combat veteran is also a psychopath?
It almost seems as though the authors are trying to distance themselves from the subject of the book, embarrassed to be talking about him.
I would not for a moment deny Musashi's violence and the violence of the culture he lived in, or try to glorify that violence, but I am not sure that we can look back across time and judge people according to modern standards.

A Must Buy
By Danny L. Anderson
This book is unique in that it doesn't fit the mold of a Y2K book on Myamoto Mushashi, arguably Japan's most skilled swordsman. Known as a "kensei"/"sword saint" his knowledge found in is most famous work Go Rin No Sho (The Book of Five Rings) and is the most disseminated work of his combat tactics and strategies. Far less known is his philosophy on life. Dokkodo. Dokkodo is not only translated but it is viewed from five different perspectives: a monk, a warrior, a teacher, a businessman, and an insurance executive. No longer will Musashi's work be only viewed from a martial arts context but from all walks of life. This makes it a very unique book and is a keeper.
